Message: The Body of Christ

If you missed last Friday (Oct 17), here's what Zach shared to the fellowship:

This is an encouragement to the people here.  

The Body of Christ in Context to running the race of Faith (conviction of the things that are unseen) Bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth,

bringing righteousness, peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit to everyone who is here on earth

Body of Christ that is CCF…. each person as a participant of this fellowship

talk about 1 Cor 12… talks about Spiritual Gifts, the blessings that God has given us from the Spirit, if you are a part of the Body of Christ, you have a Spiritual Gift. Perhaps you don’t know but that's okay. one thing that you will hear people say is ‘if you’re not a leader then God isn't working in you, or you’re not maturing.’ but that's not true, we’re not all called or given the gift of leadership… i could go on about leadership for a while but I digress…

1 Cor 12:12-27 - One Body

12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

• talks about Spiritual gifts, everyone who is of Christ has it and therefore we must recognize we are all part of the same body, different parts.

14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?

• the key with one body is that we are all working together here, whether you like your role or not, you're part of the body and you're just as important as the person sitting beside you. Sure you can say that so and so is really great at worship, or so and so is good at praying, but "i'm only good at baking cookies"... perhaps we need to look at it with respect to other people and not oneself. ie. what if someone is studying for exams and you decided to make a random batch of cookies for them and then give it to them, spend some time and talk to them, that could make or break someone’s day, and that could have been the exact expression of Love that they needed at that time. So just because 'all you can do is make cookies', don't think you don't have a role to play in the kingdom of heaven.

18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. 19 If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now there are many members, but one body.

• NLT: But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body.
  

• important to note here... it has been reiterated. There are many people in this body of Christians, lets not forget that, its not an exclusive 'club' of people that can join, 'only people who pray are part of the body of Christ', no that's wrong, it goes on...
  
• everyone has a gift or part to play, and sometimes we don't get to choose it, He will use you as He wants and that's where it is important for us to understand obedience
  
• Obedience: compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority
  

NLT

21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”
22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other (there must be no division unity). 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

• alludes to Ephesians 4... no division, you must have unity

Ephesians 4 - Importance of Unity in the Body

4 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore [a]it says,

“When He ascended on high,

He led captive a host of captives,

And He gave gifts to men.”

9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what [b]does it mean except that He also [c]had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the [d]saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

• NLT Translation of v11-13:  Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
  
• James 1:3-4 Reference //For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
  
• it is clear that faith, the body and Spiritual gifts are linked here. We are to use our gifts as the body of Christ to BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST.
  

14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

• the head is the most important part of the body, debatably, it tells everything what to do and how each thing should work, everything goes back to the brain which has receptors which tells the body how to react to certain situations, likewise, Christ is the same way.

What is going to stop the body?

1. Fatigue - its so easy to give up, to get tired of what you are doing, it is important to pace yourself, but more importantly, its key that we work in unity, in sync, have you tried running out of sync?
2. Getting injured or hit - we have to slow down what we’re doing and allow ourselves to recuperate and build back up
3. malnourishment, we need to be constantly fed and we need to constantly drink in order to keep the body going.. where are we gonna get that? John 6:35

Note.

God will use each and everyone one of us to spread His good news, and it doesn't necessarily have to be verbally spoken to everyone around you. He has those set apart, those who are evangelists, they do the talking, but you, what do you do? what do you know about yourself? Reflect on your life to see what God has been doing and how he’s being using you in the past to serve others and reflect on that. Is that perhaps the way that God wants to use you now? I don’t think it is coincidence that he has been sharing his Love with you in this certain expression just so that you can go “oh thats nice” but i believe that He uses other people to get to you, and he uses what you already have in ways that we can’t imagine. I believe that if you don’t like to talk a lot, God won’t (or will) put you in a situation to glorify His name that requires you to talk a lot. Perhaps you like serving, maybe you like praying for other people… these things don’t need to be done in public but these things need to be done. So don’t think that what you are doing is useless, because its not.

Points to take away...

1. Christ as the head
1. a body without a head goes nowhere, ie. a chicken without a head, you can cut its head off and it will still run around and it will run in circles until it dies, in that time its useless, and the chicken itself has no meaning, just running crazy until it dies. Only with the head does it know to feed itself, when to eat and when to rest. Only with its head does it know how when it is in danger etc.
   
2. importance of the body of Christ
1. work together to achieve one goal, that is to spread the gospel and share God’s love with the world, bring glory to the Lord, love the Lord etc.
2. We are called to run a race to bring the kingdom down to earth as it is in Heaven, as a body of Christians, not as single Christians doing it one at a time, but working together in cohesion.
   
   
3. each person has a part to play
1. Each person is blessed with a different gift, but what are we to use these gifts for
2. 1 Cor 12:4-7 NLT - “ There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other”
3. if we are part of the body of Christ, and our faith is growing, do we have so much faith that we would be able to walk on water? when i say that, I mean do miraculous things that would inspire more faith to others?
   
4. love is key to the body
1. Col 3:14 -  “Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
2. you gotta treat the body right and know when you feed it!
1. how do you treat the other members of the body? with Love and care and patience?
2. never skip a leg day.
3. what do you feed and what do you drink? John 6:35
4. listening to your body and how it reacts

What can you do to build up the body of Christ?

Individuals

• rebuke and encourage - vision
• cook and clean for one another - gift of hospitality
• support and walk with brothers and sisters

Fellowship

• pray for each other
• be proactive and involved in the fellowship
• celebration! good times.

Church

• share the Gospel with others and evangelize
• being inclusive and welcoming of newcomers
• forgive!
• pray.

Vision Casting (9/12/14)

For those of you who missed last Friday, Zach shared with us the vision for the year, running the race of faith", and what it means for us as individual followers of Christ and as a whole fellowship.  Catch up on his notes here!

Introduction

introduce and read to them the vision for the year: “Running the race of Faith”

• Living out the Christian life and enduring trials and hardships with the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
• A race may be life, or it may be a trial, temptation, battle you are currently facing
• as the body of Christ, we are going to be facing many of these throughout the year, and school is actually just one big trial in itself, but why and how are we going to handle these things?
• Often times we become apathetic in a solution or believe we can’t do it, “maybe this just can’t be resolved” but to me, that just shows that we have given up. When the time comes and you are face to face with the Devil, in however that may be, what are you going to do?  

The Cause - why are we running this race in the first place? If I’m a Christian and I’m already saved, then what are you talking about. why does this matter to me?

• Chap 9: the reason why we are running the race of the Christian Life
• before only the high priest could enter the most holy place in the earthly sanctuary (9:7) and what the high priest did was that he would be the one who would appeal to God for the atoning of sins and make the sacrifices in order to gain God’s forgiveness
• Without shedding blood, there was no forgiveness (9:22) and this is why we had to sacrifice animals beforehand
• So God sent his one and only BELOVED Son to die for us, and it is only by his GRACE that we are living the way we are now. Christ is the mediator for us, more on that later, but He is also the one who grants us grace.
• Christ died for us 9:14 → The blood of Christ who enters not into a temple that is made by man but enters heaven as the most high priest and sacrificed himself for the forgiveness of MAN
• It is Christ who cleanses us, why? look at verse 9:14 - Christ cleanses our consciences from acts that lead to death so that we may serve the living God”
• 9:15 - Christ is the Mediator of the NEW covenant that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance
• Mediator → Mediate → to reconcile between two parties → to settle and bring harmony to two parties.
• Therefore Christ is the one who reconciles and makes peace for us with God, he faces God on OUR behalf. This in a sense is the idea of repentance and continuous sanctification (being continuously cleansed and being made holy)
• 9:26-28 - “...but now he has appeared once for all at the end of ages to do away with sin by sacrificing of himself. Just as a man destined to die one, and after that to face judgement, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people”
• Chapter 10:11-17 talks about what we receive from Christ and what WE GAIN from his sacrifice
• after that, it proceeds that the author tells us that, “Where these have been forgiven there is no longer any sacrifice for sin” (10:18)
• this is a clear indication that we should not be living our lives trying to earn God’s grace, trying to earn salvation and earn our way into heaven, we have already been forgiven, so what is next?

The start (“This isn't so bad, i could probably do this!” - the easy and fun part, filled with optimism // with Jesus anything is possible!!!)

• we often are too optimistic in our attempts to conquer our battles and end up going and ‘running’ too quickly without realizing the distance that is left to go

Runners High (“the feeling that you could go on running forever, and you could beat anyone in the world” - easy to fall to pride, and only lasts for so long)

• runners usually go in between here and the previous point for the duration of the race
• it is easy for pride to sneak up onto you and take you down
• often times people push themselves too hard and don’t pace themselves and end up getting the cramps again

A little bit on faith...

• Chp 11: talks about faith, and the heroes of faith (the perseverance through trials in appreciation for the sacrifice)
• Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
• faith is the substance of things hoped for, evidence of things unseen (ESV)
• Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (NASB)
• Chapter 11 talks about all the heroes of faith who were “longing for a better country, a heavenly one. therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God for he has prepared a city for them”
• talks about Moses - He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward”
• what does that mean for us?
• All of these people were commended for their faith but none of them had received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only TOGETHER with us would they be made perfect - 11:39
• not all of them experienced triumph over their circumstances but they were all blessed by God for what they stood and believed for
  

The Finish (The Reward) (Finishing the race and sitting at the winners podium where Jesus is first place)

• Chp 12: Running the race that we are called to (the race of faith of which that is life)
• Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. - 12:1
• called to persevere in faith because this is what is going to carry you throwing the disciplining that God puts you through, as well as to persevere when you are tempted or face to face with sin
• 12:2 - “let us fix our eyes on Jesus as he has already defeated these things as he is the perfecter of our faith” - Jesus is the author and pioneer of our salvation as he demonstrated for us his obedience to the cross in view of what please His father and in view of what would happen in the future.
• Jesus already beat sin and his example is here in Matthew 4
• “and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” - Jesus was exalted being seated right next to God’s side.
• we run the race as the end goal where we may share in his Holiness, so that we may also sit at the right hand and bask in the presence of our Savior, so that we may be treated and loved like how God loves Jesus…… oh my.
• As we become more like Jesus, we are able to fend off the temptations of sin much more easily, therefore allowing us to maintain a constant connection with God without being interrupted by the Devil. Of course, the closer you get to God, that harder it is, but that's for another day…
  
• “No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. …You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness — they have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means — the only complete realist.” - C.S. Lewis

• The Christian Life is not easy, but filled with trial and persecution, we are called to be faithful to the end, as we know there is someone who has already done it, and we can use Christ, as the example of the best runner in the race.

running - how to run → see 1 Cor 9:26-27, it requires self discipline.

The Cramps (How are we going to run this race?) - There is no way to complete a race without being disciplined in training and being disciplined by God. There is so often a temptation to give up on what we are doing, what we are fighting for, so easy to cave into sin, but we are called to be disciplined in what we do. When you follow a training plan, you don’t skip a day or a week of training just because you feel like it, you keep going because you know every moment you train counts. what do you do and think when you start to feel the heat?

• Chp 10: the building of perseverance and confidence (it is key that we have this as faith is about having confidence in the things unseen)
• We are to draw near to Christ - “...and since we have a great priest over the house of God let us DRAW NEAR TO GOD with a sincere heart in full assurance of FAITH… having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water (HS). Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for He who promised is faithful. Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, let us not give up on meeting together as some are in the habit of doing but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the day approaching” (10:21-25)
  
• 10:35-38: so do not throw away your confidence it will be richly rewarded you need to persevere so that when you have done the WILL OF GOD you will receive what he has promised.
  
• 10:39 - Identity of those who are saved - we are not people who shrink back, but stand up and fight for what is Good. (this is Christians being put on the line and being harassed for loving Christ and spreading the word, they were being tortured and crucified for the good of the Word)

• The way Hebrews is structured is that it tell us about the the prize and then it tells us a bunch of characteristics, but seemingly with no point to them, why? Well lets look at chapter 12.
• Jesus is the example, and A fathers discipline. it is in preparation of what we are going to be doing as Christians and that is running the race that we are called to.
  
• It is important to recognize that the Lord disciplines “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,  and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” - Hebrews 12:5-6

• In order for us to discipline ourselves, as well as get through the way the Lord disciplines us, we must have perseverance and endurance in what were doing, we can’t just give up, but we must be disciplined in our pursuit of the Lord

• So why should we endure his discipline and endure trials, what does this have to do with the theme?
  
• James 1:2 “[run the race] and persevere trials so that your faith may be made perfect and complete lacking in nothing” → no one is perfect, the only one is Christ , and we will only be made perfect when we are reunited with Christ, therefore the race is until we are reunited with him. → Every hardship that we face and endure and complete makes us more like Christ.
  
• know that God disciplines us for our good in order that we may share in his Holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:10-11)
  
  
• what is so interesting about Righteousness and peace? well lets look at Romans 14:17 and James 3:17-18
• Romans 14:17 - for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking but righteousness, peace and Joy in the Holy Spirit
• when we accept Jesus into our hearts and are baptized, we are blessed with the HS. Therefore, those who accept to run the race, we have the holy Spirit, that means the kingdom is Heaven is here with us right now.
  
• James 3:17-18: but the wisdom that comes from heaven is pure, then peace; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the harvest of righteousness
  
• Peace and righteousness is from heaven, so in this sense, the kingdom comes down from heaven. So what does this have to do with the Vision?
  
• When we run the race of faith, we are living the life of a Christian which is all inclusive with the ups and downs; we are endure hardship, face trials, get disciplined by God, and in the end we are rewarded by being able to sit and bask in the presence of our Maker.
  
• What does that mean and why should we run the race then?
• We run the race of faith so that we may inherit the kingdom of God. God disciplines his children so that they may be ready to inherit and receive the kingdom in the here and now. We are here now making the kingdom of God a reality that exists here on earth just as it does in Heaven.
• Heaven will come down to earth → hallowed be thy name...thy kingdom COME thy will be done on EARTH as it is in heaven.
  
• we become kingdom transporters, therefore as we life as Christians, we are people transporting the kingdom of heaven down to earth. how awesome is that?
  
• we are currently bringing the the kingdom down here to earth, and thus we are part of it, it is not something that is going to happen tomorrow or the day after but it is now. we are building the kingdom here and now so that God may dwell with us and rule over His kingdom here on earth as it is in Heaven.
  
• So that we may share it, and be a light unto others, we don’t know what or how it may look like in a practical sense, but we are confidence that God will be the one who reveals it all to those who endure these types of situations. It is God who grants wisdom (James 1:5) but only when we ask for it in FULL FAITH.

So now that we know what it means to run the race? What can we do? We’ll running a race involves the body, the Body of Christ.

Trials allow us to be receptive of God's grace and God's love, but it is times like this that produces endurance and perseverance in our faith. By this we are enabled to run harder and run longer in the race we are called to. (Hebrews 12:1). We are called to run a race of self discipline in our actions and in our love (1Cor 9:24) and part of that is training our bodies, both physical and Christian bodies to have self control of our desires and wants. All parts of the body must work together cohesively in the same direction, moving towards, and being led by the image of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-16)

Practical Applications…

• so together as the body of Christ what can we do?

• Prayer meetings - sometimes you feel like you don’t want to go, but are you saying that your work is more important?
• praying is a battlefront, when we pray the devil is not pleased, we must keep pushing forward in this, especially praying for people who are dealing with struggles in their lives as prayer
• are you doubting the power of God to carry you through what He’s already doing in your life? or are you trusting Him to get you through it no matter what because anything you do for Him is worth the sacrifice. He died for you, and you would rather look at a book than talk to Him? Do you really know your Savior?
• DG - this is where the disciplining happens
• CCF Fridays - maybe you’re an introverted person and you don’t go because its too much to handle, what would it look like for you to allow God to handle the people instead of your own energy and your own emotions?
• for the extrovert - what does it look like to be sensitive to other peoples emotions and not be the person driving the conversation? what about praying for someone who seems to be having a bad day?
• When someone has a struggle and is willing to share, are we willing to walk along side and pray for that person then an there? are we there to walk with the person until they overcome it?

• For the individual
• temptations come and temptations go, but where will you run when your are tempted? it is super easy to just sit down and say I quit and just cave, i can relate. but when we face trials of many kinds and overcome them, we are rewarded in that our faith is built up over and over again re: James 1:2.
• give example of running (“I always ask myself, should i stop?”) anyone who runs knows that once you stop, its extremely tough to start back up again and go at the same pace. this is likewise with our faith runs.
• Sharing with a friend - its hard to share, but when the chances come around, are you willing to take it?
• are you willing to stand up for what you believe and what you do?
• Give example of housemates mocking for “Jesus things”
• Trials in life - do we just cave in and give up, or do we keep running? do you push to get over it, and when you can’t push anymore, do you look at yourself in the mirror and give up or are you going to let God be the one that pushes you through?
• what about day to day discpline with your spending time with Christ? When you commit to a time, do you stay committed? Even when it becomes dry, or you get a ‘running cramp’ in your faith, do you stop?

Welcome Back!

Hi CCF! Welcome back to a new year of school.  But not only that but we're excited for this upcoming year and what God is going to do with it.  Check out our calendar for events, we'd love to see and meet you.

CCF Retreat 2014: I AM WHO I AM

*This post will eventually get longer once we get a hold of pictures and we have more time to reflect but for now, here are some things for people who went and wanted the slides.

This year's theme for CCF retreat was the finding out the person of God. We know our one God as three separate people: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each have distinct roles. Each plays a different part in our Christian walk. The Father knows your being and has coordinated the plan of salvation, bringing light to the darkness that you were in, delighting in you. The Son came on earth and provided an example for us to follow, growing in stature and wisdom with God and with man. The Holy Spirit affirms to us what Jesus taught, reminding of and prompting us through Scriptures, wise counsel and the list goes on. Pastor Andrew spoke and expounded these three aspects of God, using a lot of Scripture to show us the character of God and our response in turn.

Week of Global Prayer and Outreach

From November 11-14, CCF hosted a week of global prayer and outreach for all the campus fellowships at Mac (If you were wondering, Nov 15 was a Friday where CCF went out for evangelism/prayer walk)! During both morning and evening prayer meetings, we prayed for the persecuted church, unreached peoples, social justice, Hamilton, as well as our very own campus, Mac. It was a great time to get to know one another in fellowship, especially praying with those from different fellowships for a common cause - to bring God's kingdom down to every corner of this world and for his glory to shine radiantly bright even in the darkest of places. 

A big thanks to all you came out :) Some have asked if they could get the resources we used for that week, and sorry for the delay, but here they are!

Life is so much greater than just what we can see and hear! So pray big and pray bold because we have a God above us, around us, and in us, that hears everything, knows everything, and is in control of everything. That being said, for those who came out, or those who could not, please continue thinking and praying and serving globally. There is so much more than this. 

"With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints," - Ephesians 6:18

From October to November, CCF collected clothes to donate to the Good Shepherd in Hamilton, where 18.1% of the population lives in poverty... crazy to even believe that considering the lives we're living. Thank you to everyone who helped out by donating their clothes!!! :) Here are just some pictures and a quick blurb on the of why we did this! 

One Sunday at church, the pastor was challenging all of us why it seems like there is only one demographic in the church nowadays, and later on, how we can so often neglect serving the community and reaching out to the poor. We're all people created in the image of God and thus, that is how we should be treated. Like what John Piper once said, "Why does God bless us with abundance? So we can have enough to live on, and then use the rest for all manner of good works that alleviate spiritual and physical misery. Enough for us; abundance for others... copper will do."

"Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.” – Galatians 2:10

When Jesus talked about the poor, I believe he really meant the poor - like the actual, literal poor. The ones who are poor not only in spirit, but physically and financially as well... the outcasts of society. I really do firmly believe that Jesus loved the poor, the homeless, the oppressed, the outcasts. 

If so, why is the church full of those who are technically wealthy, those who go to school and are well off – those who are 'normal'? But Christianity is not for the rich, it is not for the well-off. Instead, Jesus challenges them. He dined with the tax collector (Mark 2:13-17), defended the adulteress (John 8:2-11), and reached out and healed the leper (Matt 8:1-4). I mean, Jesus loved them so much and had such an eager desire and mission to save them – which was God`s will (John 6:38) – that people thought he himself was a drunkard and a glutton (Matt 11:19)!

This all prompts me to ask the question… Where are the poor? Have you seen them in your pews? Do you see them in fellowship? Do you see the church reaching out and loving them as if they were also made in God’s image, which they are? Do you see the church actively laying down their own rights so they can go out and change the world (1 Cor 9:20)?

It's my prayer that CCF will become more selfless and sacrificial when it comes to how we conduct and prioritize our lifestyles - counting others as more significant as ourselves (Phil 2:3) and always remembering the poor (Gal 2:10)!

The Heart of Men's & Women's Ministry

Tonight we had a men and women's night where we spent time in our respective genders. For each of them, the DGL leaders spoke of what they believe God has placed in their hearts for their respective gender ministries. We hope you'll join us in this. 

Bible Study: 1 John 4:7-21

Last week we had a bible study on 1 John 4:7-21 as it brings into mind much of what the vision is centred on: what is the love of God and then, what happens when we abide in it. For those of you who missed it, below are some notes but they are in no way all that can be learned from this passage.

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Context:

   Previously in the letter, John has spoken of the idea that we are God’s children (3:1-2, 2:1) and uses this as a point to jump from. He has spoken of leaving behind the ideas of the world in exchange for what God wants. Even before Chapter 4, he has already mentioned the concept of abiding in God, that this is a lasting act. (2:17, 2:24-28) So in this chapter, he will return to this concept.·

Observations:
It's not an address to "people" or strangers or servants, but conveys intimacy and an established relationship with the audience who are to be sons and daughters of God as well

Interesting way to start off this section. Instead of a command to do, John says "let us", an idea of allowing ourselves to receive love. And even before that, he addresses us as "Beloved", a name that says that you are already loved. A couple words later, he mentions that love is from God, yet again receiving love (not from yourself). So already, we have this sense of receiving and abiding in love. He describes what love is. It is first shown in its fullest form through Jesus Christ, who God sent. God made the first move; we only know love because He loved us first.

Only then, after he makes that point, he uses love in an active tense, and this is now giving love ("whoever loves"). This reminds me of our theme, how we have to remember to receive love from God before anything - loving, serving, etc.

An important thing to see is that all three parts of the trinity are in this passage. God the father is the one who in love sent Jesus Christ to show us perfect love. And then we see that the Spirit is in those who abide in God. And what is the role of the Holy Spirit? Let's look at another writing from John:

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. - John 14:26

We see that the Spirit is given to teach and remind us of the truth that was shown in Christ Jesus. So in this idea of abiding in the love of God, not only is God the Father important, but we must see that the Holy Spirit's role cannot be neglected. 

Questions:

1.       What does the writer mean by “love being perfected in us?”

 Perfected in this context means mature, God’s love in us is mature. His love is mature or perfected in us inside of us.

Once we grasp the magnitude of his perfect love and abide in it, we will be able to act on it by loving others as the passage states. We experience perfect love through Jesus Christ but we cannot express perfect love. We are being transformed by the Holy Spirit in a continual process until Christ comes again.

Relation to the Theme:
As was said before, this passage written by John has heavy ties to our theme this year. It begins with a depiction of what the love of God is. Firstly, it is in God's character to be loving. And He has given perfect love in the form of Jesus Christ who came and died on the cross for us, doing all this while we were still sinners. And when this love takes root in us, it begins to change us. Continuing to live in this love, abiding, requires the constant in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit. This love is completed when it begins to bear fruit, like a vine. It is continually changing us so that we develop a greater love for God and by that extension, develop a deeper love for others.

Frosh Connexion

If you are an upcoming Mac first year who has stumbled upon this blog or if you’re already in HCCF, we may have news for you =) 

Every year HCCF is part of an event called Frosh Connexion that is held in Toronto for all frosh who are coming to Hamilton in the new year. It’s essentially a venue where incoming first years can meet upper years from the CCF or ACF within that fellowship. There is a BBQ [free to frosh =)] as well as worship and a short sermon for all universities as a large group. That is then followed by some time for each university to meet separately. 

Honestly, it’s a really great opportunity to meet upper years as well as fellow frosh and get your questions answered if you have any. I know when I went I don’t really remember much other than the frosh leader’s awkward video but I do remember feeling assured that there was indeed a community at McMaster that I could join and grow in. So come on out =) We’d love to see you.
